La reata, lariat, or vaquero's rope is a braided rawhide lasso used by Mexican cowboys and is today a legacy of Texas first real cowboys: the Mexican vaqueros. A reata is made of strands of rawhide rendered supple that have been cut, shaved, wet, stretched, dried, greased and braided in the traditional style and represent a dying art. This reata is composed of 4 strands, is 3/8 inch in diameter, and has a length of 40 feet. It has a loop, or eye called honda or hondo, attached at one end through which the other end runs through.
Raul M. Hinojosa cherished this particular lariat as it was a gift from a cowboy friend. It is a historical artifact with sentimental value. It is located at his home and will be shipped to the buyer. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Raul M. Hinojosa Memorial Scholarship Fund.
