Grade 7 - BROILERS - Hello my name is Burk Brunson I am 13 years old and in 7th grade at Franklin middle school. I am a member of 4H (Trail Blazers) in Wheelock Texas. My project for the Robertson County Fair this year was Market Broilers and Commercial Heifers. I have raised and shown broilers for the last 3 years and have learned a lot in this 4th year. This year’s project has taught me that working hard and motivating myself produced better growth for my chickens and made me enjoy the project more. I also found that by motivating myself made me actually enjoy going out and doing my project by myself. My time spent working with my broilers started every morning around 5:30 am before school and I tried to keep this consistent on weekends. After school I would refill waters and feeders and get them moving and then I would do night feedings around 7:30 pm. I also worked very hard this year on following feeding calendars and using specific types of feed. I learned that culling my broilers often also allowed them to the best growth percentage. I am very thankful for this opportunity and everyone involved. Even though I was sad by the cancelation of the 2020 Robertson County Fair I know that my time wasn’t a complete loss because I have learned a great deal that I will get to apply to next year’s project.
