Many years ago when I would head up the trimming of the many live oaks that the LSMCIC invested for our St. Anne’s Church and Parish Hall grounds, After mass one Sunday I asked for Volunteers to help trim the trees. A big-shouldered and very tall man stood up and introduced himself as Fred Colston and VOLUNTEERED to help. My first thought was “I do not need a ladder if he is going to help”.
Our families became best of friends to the point that I was asked to eulogize him at his services in Houston. He would come by and encourage me watch certain educational programs on the RFD Channel kinda like a Dad would do.
Both Fred and his lovely wife Joanna, were BIG TIME VOLUNTEERS from that day in church on. To this day, their spirit is still alive as they were both very talented with their hands. Fred would make Mesquite pens and Joanna would sew both a UT Burnt Orange and Aggie Maroon Blankets every year to sell at this auction. A year after Joanna passed away, their children sent us a huge box of blankets that they donated to the LSMCIC for us to do what we are doing here with this lot.
This is why we are big believers in the word VOLUNTEERISM and all of the GOODNESS that it stands for. May the Colstons RIP !!!
